Tesh left the comm tower then leaned against the wall, surveying the area. She didn’t see any movement; the town still seemed abandoned. If the criminals were on their way back, they weren’t close enough to cause trouble. Which meant she might have time to get the generator back online.

Hustling around the building, she took one more look at the horizon before turning her full attention to the massive box attacked to the wall. It hummed, giving an indication that it might be on a low power mode. The panel on the side once held a lock but it was long gone. She pulled it open and peered inside.

The levers had all been depressed to the off position. Only one remained up and that was the general power, the thing that governed the others. She shut that one down before flipping the others. Lights appeared above each one, indicating their circuits still functioned. The main one would crank the power back on after a brief reset.

“Don’t move.” A male voice surprised her. Tesh swore she hadn’t heard anyone approach. And it was quiet enough that she should have. However this guy snuck up on her, he did it with some serious skill. She remained motionless, waiting for his next order. She didn’t want to risk him being armed. “What’re you doing there?”

“Turning the power back on,” Tesh said. “I need to get a message out before the Veldon destroy the FTL buoys. I’m warning the other colonies about what’s going on. Are you with those criminal bastards?”

“I’m asking the questions,” he grumbled, “are you with the station security?”

“Corporal Sarah Tesh. And yes, I came from the station just before it blew up. We were trying to slow the Veldon down but several of their ships have probably landed by now. So if you’d stop screwing around and help me, we might be able to save some more lives. Who the hell are you anyway?”

“Pereth’s my name. You left your buddy to die out there.”

“Go to hell,” Tesh said. “I couldn’t find him after I stopped your friends from trying to kill us.”

“They dragged him off. Back to our camp to meet the Veldon.” Pereth crouched. “I told them I’d track your ass down. They told me I needed to let you go. Just ignore the fact you killed my friends. Well, I couldn’t do that, Sarah. And now…” He nudged her with his gun, pressing the barrel in the middle of her back. “Now you—”

Tesh spun, throwing her arm out at the same time. The sudden motion caught Pereth off guard. He didn’t pull the trigger right away. The shot went wide, slapping the ground next to the generator. The others better have heard that. She punched him in the face then grabbed his weapon to maintain control of it.

Pereth growled, a bestial sound mirrored in his wild blue eyes. He tried to slam his head into hers. She fell backward, holding tight to his hand. The momentum of his attack brought him down on top of her, but she bucked, tossing him into the wall.
